Oryuk Islets
The Oryuk Islets are composed of a chain of six islands edged by curious and strange cliffs which begin just off the Korean coast at Seungdomal, Bookan of Busan Bay and stretch into the ocean in a south easterly direction.
These six islands which thrust out of the sea in front of Yongho-dong are Bangpaesom
(Shield Islet, 2,166§³ high), Solsom (Pine Islet, 5,505§³), Surisom (5,313§³), Songossom (Awl Islet, 2,073§³), Goolsom (Cave Islet, 9,716§³) and Deungdaesom (Light House Island, 3,416§³) in the order of closest to the furthest from the shore.
The Oryuk Islets is estimated to have been a small peninsula connected to the mainland 120,000 years ago and was separated due to erosion by strong waves over a long period of time. The geological composition of Bangpaesom, Solsom and Seungoomal show that they were one piece of land a long time ago before the two islands of Bangpaesom and Solsom were separated from the shore.
The Oryuk Islets which belongs to Gwangalli terrace and is one of the oldest sea terraces in Busan Bay. Red soil can be seen easily in the strata of the sea terrace due to erosion caused by exposure to the elements.
Gwangalli is home to a lush green layer of vegetation and slopes down to meet the sea. The sea terrace is comprised of three steps whose heights are 35m, 20m and 9m. The highest step is Gwangalli step which is composed of quite thick sedimentary rock.
The sedimentary layers are comprised of a flat round pebbles (3 to 5cm in diameter) and because of serious weathering, the color of these layers is red with the pebbles easily broken with a survey shovel. The origin of the name "Oryuk Islets" comes from the fact that at low tide five islands are visible but at high tide six are visible. This is because Bangpaesom and Solsom are connected by a causeway which is exposed at low tide, giving the impression that Bangpaesom and Solsom are one island called Woosakdo.
Thus "Oryuk Islets" means five or six islands. Therefore Woosackdo (Bangpaesum and Solsum) is the origin of the name "Oryuk Islets" and is geological evidence to prove that Woosackdo was connected to the shore a long time ago. Songossom whose shape looks like an awl is the smallest but the highest island among the six and Goolsom which is the biggest island has a large cave with enough water dropping from the ceiling of the cave for a person to drink. Deungdaesom which is the farthest island is flat and used to be called Batsom which means field island, but it was renamed after a lighthouse was built. Except Deungdaesom, the other five islands are all uninhabited. A long time ago, because the current near Oryuk Islets was very fast and dangerous, people are said to have thrown sacrificial offerings into the sea to pacify the God of the Sea and to ensure safe sailing near Oryuk Islets. Today, Oryuk Islets is the gate to Korea and the symbol of Busan Port because all the ships passing through Busan Port which is the biggest international port in Korea must pass near Oryukto. In addition, Oryuk Islets which is a famous symbol of Busan shows the independent spirit of the people of Busan.Oryuk Islets where many poets couldn"t stop making poetry a long time ago is loved by many people as a fishing place.
